    What happens to my recycled electronics?

    The Retrofit Companies is a member of the Basel Action Network's Electronics Recyclers' Pledge of True Stewardship and qualifies as an "E-Steward" in its service areas covering several states in the Midwest, Indiana and Oregon.

    The Retrofit Companies, along with other "E-Stewards" of The Pledge are obliged to uphold the following standards regarding e-waste handling:

  • TRC's hazardous e-waste will not be sent to solid waste landfills;

  • TRC's Hazardous e-waste will not be exported to developing countries, or to prisons, for recycling;

  • TRC has a certified, or otherwise comprehensive and comparable "environmental management system" in place and our operation meets best practices.

  • Along with our high environmental standards concerning the handling and recycling of your electronic waste, The Retrofit Companies also addresses your data security concerns.

  • Legislation such as the Federal Privacy Act, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and State legislation address privacy issues and how documents must be properly destroyed and disposed. Our data destruction service ensures you are compliant.

  • It used to be conventional wisdom that partitioning and formatting a hard disk using the FDISK and FORMAT utilities in DOS would wipe a drive clean. Unfortunately, many over the counter disk utility programs can easily recover data from this process. Our wiping program eliminates this potential for data recovery. We also open every computer system to verify the actual hard drives present that require data wiping. Let us demonstrate our sanitizing system for you:

  • If a medium (hard drives, diskettes, data tapes, etc) cannot be wiped, then it is shredded. A Certificate of Destruction is issued upon processing. Our partner operates an on-site shredder.

  • Any identification tags that remain on your computer equipment can invite a host of problems. No one wants to see their company's name listed on a computer once donated to a charity and eventually found in a landfill. We scrape and remove all identification markers and tags on equipment resold for reuse, further protecting your identity.
