Each waste type is processed in a different manner. Below you will find a simplified explanation of what happens to your recycled waste.
Fluorescent Lamp Recycling
Fluorescent lamps are processed under pressure to separate mercury containing phosphorous powder from the glass tube and aluminum end caps. The phosphorous powder is sent through a mercury reclaiming process in which greater than 99% is recovered and can be reused in new industrial applications. Glass and aluminum are also both reused in new consumer products.
Ballast Recycling
The Retrofit Companies' ballast recycling program is designed to minimize liability exposure through proper PCB ballast recycling.
Ballast Recycling Process: Incoming ballasts are dismantled. PCB capacitors and contaminated asphalt potting compound are collected for final incineration. Aluminum, copper, and steel are separated and sent to metal recyclers for reuse. At the end of the process, a certificate is issued to verify process completion. Realize this is an abridged description of a process involving numerous details to comply with regulatory standards and ensure legitimate and reliable ballast recycling.
Packaging, Labeling, and Shipping Ballasts for Recycling: Non-leaking ballasts should be placed in secure 55-gallon drums. In the event of a leaking ballast, please place the affected ballast in a separate lined and sealed container to prevent exposure. Drums should be labeled with appropriate information regarding the generator and address location. Packaging, labeling, and shipping guidelines can vary depending on the state. TRC’s service staff can assist you with requirements in your state.
